When NASA sends astronauts back to the Moon and to Mars, the Orion Multipurpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) will be what takes them there. To build these next-generation spacecraft, NASA contracted aerospace manufacturer Lockheed Martin. Combined with the massive Space Launch System (SLS), the Orion spacecraft will allow for long-duration missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO) for the first time in over 50 years.
On Monday, Sept. 23rd, NASA and Lockheed Martin announced that they had finalized a contract for the production and operations of six missions using the Orion spacecraft, with the possibility of up to twelve being manufactured in total. This fulfills the requirements for NASA’s Project Artemis and opens the possibility for further missions to destinations like Mars and other locations in deep-space.
The Orion concept was unveiled on January 14th, 2004, shortly after the accident with the Space Shuttle Columbia. At the time, the Orion was known as the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV). It was intended to replace the aging Space Shuttle fleet and serve as a successor to the Apollo Command and Service Module (CSM) that took astronauts to the Moon between 1969 and 1972.
At present, NASA plans to use the Orion capsule to send the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2024 (Artemis III). With the contract finalized for the delivery of the next six vehicles, this vision is one step closer to becoming a reality. Rick Ambrose, the executive vice president of Lockheed Martin Space, spoke glowingly about the contract and the partnership it represents in a recent company press release:
“This contract clearly shows NASA’s commitment not only to Orion, but also to Artemis and its bold goal of sending humans to the Moon in the next five years. We are equally committed to Orion and Artemis and producing these vehicles with a focus on cost, schedule and mission success.”
The contract NASA signed with Lockheed – the Orion Production and Operations Contract (OPOC) – is an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract specifying the delivery of 6 to 12 Orion spacecraft through to Sept. 30th, 2030. Initially, NASA ordered three Orion spacecraft to conduct Artemis missions III through V – crewed missions to the lunar surface occurring between 2024 and 2026 – for $2.7 billion.

Further cost-reduction measures include advanced manufacturing technologies, material and component bulk buys, an accelerated mission cadence, and the fact that the Orion crew modules and systems are reusable. As Mike Hawes, Orion program manager for Lockheed Martin Space, attested:
“We have learned a lot about how to design and manufacture a better Orion – such as designing for reusability, using augmented reality and additive manufacturing – and we’re applying this to this next series of vehicles. Driving down cost and manufacturing them more efficiently and faster will be key to making the Artemis program a success. One must also appreciate how unique Orion is. It’s a spaceship like none other. We’ve designed it to do things no other spacecraft can do, go to places no astronaut has been and take us into a new era of human deep space exploration.”
Cosmicism is the literary philosophy developed and used by the American writer H. P. Lovecraft in his weird fiction.[1][2] Lovecraft was a writer of philosophically intense horror stories that involve occult phenomena like astral possession and alien miscegenation, and the themes of his fiction over time contributed to the development of this philosophy.[3]

The philosophy of cosmicism states "that there is no recognizable divine presence, such as a god, in the universe, and that humans are particularly insignificant in the larger scheme of intergalactic existence."[4] The most prominent theme is humanity's fear of their insignificance in the face of an incomprehensibly large universe[5][6][7]: a fear of the cosmic void.[8]
Cosmicism and humanism are incompatible.[2][9] Cosmicism shares many characteristics with nihilism, though one important difference is that cosmicism tends to emphasize the insignificance of humanity and its doings, rather than summarily rejecting the possible existence of some higher purpose (or purposes); e.g., in Lovecraft's Cthulhu stories, it is not the absence of meaning that causes terror for the protagonists, as it is their discovery that they have absolutely no power to change anything in the vast, indifferent universe that surrounds them.[citation needed] In Lovecraft's stories, whatever meaning or purpose may be invested in the actions of the cosmic beings is completely inaccessible to the human characters.[10]
Lovecraft's cosmicism was a result of his complete disdain for all things religious[citation needed], his feeling of humanity's existential helplessness in the face of what he called the "infinite spaces" opened up by scientific thought, and his belief that humanity was fundamentally at the mercy of the vastness and emptiness of the cosmos.[11] In his fictional works, these ideas are often explored humorously ("Herbert West–Reanimator," 1922), through fantastic dream-like narratives ("The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath," 1927), or through his well-known Cthulhu Mythos ("The Call of Cthulhu," 1928, and others). Common themes related to cosmicism in Lovecraft's fiction are the insignificance of humanity in the universe[12] and the search for knowledge ending in disaster.[13]
Lovecraftian characters notably become insane from the elimination of recognizable geometry.[14] Lovecraft's work also tended to impress fear of the other onto the reader, such as in The Dunwich Horror and Dagon, often portraying that which is unknown as a terrible threat to the rest of humanity. This is possibly a reflection of his own personal views, which were often insular and paranoid.
2. Cosmic indifferentism
Though cosmicism appears deeply pessimistic, H.P. Lovecraft thought of himself as neither a pessimist nor an optimist but rather a "scientific" or "cosmic" indifferentist,[15] a theme expressed in his fiction. In Lovecraft's work, human beings are often subject to powerful beings and other cosmic forces, but these forces are not so much malevolent as they are indifferent toward humanity.[16] This indifference is an important theme in cosmicism. The noted Lovecraft scholar S. T. Joshi asserts that "Lovecraft constantly engaged in (more or less) genial debates on religion with several colleagues, notably the pious writer and teacher Maurice W. Moe. Lovecraft was a strong and antireligious atheist; he considered religion not merely false but dangerous to social and political progress."[17] As such, Lovecraft's cosmicism is not religious at all, but rather a version of his mechanistic materialism. Lovecraft thus embraced a philosophy of cosmic indifferentism. He believed in a meaningless, mechanical, and uncaring universe that human beings, with their naturally limited faculties, could never fully understand. His viewpoint made no allowance for religious beliefs which could not be supported scientifically. The incomprehensible, cosmic forces of his tales have as little regard for humanity as humans have for insects.[18]
Though personally irreligious, Lovecraft used various "gods" in his stories, particularly the Cthulhu-related tales, to expound cosmicism. However, Lovecraft never conceived of them as supernatural, but extraterrestrials who understand and obey a set of natural laws which to human understanding seem magical. These beings (the Great Old Ones, Outer Gods and others) — though dangerous to humankind — are portrayed as neither good nor evil, and human notions of morality have no significance for these beings. Indeed, they exist in cosmic realms beyond human understanding. As a symbol, this is representative of the kind of universe that Lovecraft believed in.[19] Though some of these beings have - and in some cases create - cults to honor them, to the vast majority of these beings the human race is so insignificant that they aren't given any consideration whatsoever.
Chatbots, which use artificial intelligence to simulate human conversation through voice commands or text chats, incur almost zero marginal costs and can outsell some human employees by four times, so why aren't they used more often? According to new research, the main contributor is customer pushback.
Service industry outlets like American Eagle Outfitters and Domino's Pizza use chatbots, as well as online services like Amazon and eBay. The machines don't have "bad days" and never get frustrated or tired like humans, and they can save money for consumers, but new research in the INFORMS journal Marketing Science says if customers know about the chatbot before purchasing, sales rates decline by more than 79.7%.
The study authors, Xueming Luo and Siliang Tong (both of Temple University), Zheng Fang of Sichuan University, and Zhe Qu of Fudan University, targeted 6,000 customers from a financial services company. They were randomly assigned to either humans or chatbots, and disclosure of the bots varied from not telling the consumer at all, to telling them at the beginning of the conversation or after the conversation, or telling them after they'd purchased something.
"Our findings show when people don't know about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots they are four times more effective at selling products than inexperienced workers, but when customers know the conversational partner is not a human, they are curt and purchase less because they think the bot is less knowledgeable and less empathetic," said Luo, a professor and Charles Gilliland Distinguished Chair at Temple University.
"Chatbots offer enhanced technological benefits, reduced customer hassle costs and increased consumer welfare (offering the product at lower cost because bots save money on labor)," added Luo. "This data empowers marketers to target certain customer segments to cultivate customer trust in chatbots."

When it comes to limiting CO2 emissions, the results are not always what you’d expect.
Debates about climate change often draw zealots on both sides. The common accusatory opener, “Do you believe in global warming?” betrays the binary, almost religious argument between those who think we’re wrecking the planet and those who don’t. Pragmatism is rare on either side.
The science of climate change is complex, and we won’t attempt to assess man’s contribution to global warming. For a thought-provoking view of the issue, read Alex Epstein’s “The Moral Case for Fossil Fuels”. In one section, Epstein comments on U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s 2014 plea for Indonesia to cut carbon emissions to fight global warming. From 2006-16 Indonesia’s CO2 emissions grew by 3.1% annually, the Asian average. It’s no coincidence that in 2016 Indonesian life expectancy reached 69, up by 17 years over the previous half century.
As in much of the developing world, Indonesians are living longer. This is because increased energy use supports cleaner water and food, improved hygiene and better medical care, staples of developed country life. Because fossil-free energy is not yet price-competitive, its adoption implies using less energy. This in turn means shorter life expectancy for Indonesians and citizens of other developing countries. If the science around man-made climate change was unequivocal, it would imply acceptance of briefer lives today so that subsequent generations may live longer. But the science isn’t clear, and a warmer planet may be manageable. Moreover, climate prediction models have consistently overestimated actual warming. Epstein’s book offers a rare, stimulating perspective and seizes the moral high ground assumed by the anti-fossil fuel crowd. He defines improving human life as the standard against which to test climate change policies. By this measure, greater energy use has been a success.
The BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2018 reports on emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. It has some surprising facts.
Global CO2 emissions continue to rise, reaching 33.4 Billion tons last year. Yet, many will be startled to learn that America easily leads the world in reducing CO2 output. Our reduction of 794 million tons over the past decade is a 1.4% annual rate of decrease. The Shale Revolution has certainly helped, although U.S. CO2 emissions peaked in 2005, long before Shale started to have its positive impact. Improved energy efficiency is one reason. More recently, cheap natural gas, combined with regulatory constraints on coal-burning utilities, have favorably altered the mix of hydrocarbons burned to produce electricity. Regrettably, the Trump Administration’s weakening of Obama-era coal constraints will moderate this positive trend.
Another surprise is that the UK managed the second biggest ten-year drop in CO2 emissions, at 170 million tons. This represents a 3.5% annual reduction rate, easily the best for any big country. Lower coal use is similarly the cause here, caused by exhaustion of commercially accessible coal reserves.
The 2015 Paris climate accord represents the world’s desire to combat climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The U.S. withdrew from it last year. The Climate Action Network, an EU-sponsored NGO, finds that only five EU members are even halfway on track to meeting their obligations under the Paris accord. Some of the most vocal Paris supporters have been the biggest laggards.
For example, Germany has famously managed to be a leader in renewables while failing to lead in emission reductions. Heavy dependence on solar and wind requires baseload electricity generation for when it’s not sunny or windy. In Germany, that’s primarily coal (see It’s Not Easy Being Green). As an unfortunate consequence, Germany plans to increase its reliance on Russian natural gas via the Nord Stream 2 project.
Spain, Italy and Greece have all managed very credible 2-3% annual reductions in CO2 emissions. However, this is due to chronically weak economies: over the past decade, Spain has managed only one quarter of GDP growth above 1% and Italy none, while Greece has been in economic purgatory. By constraining growth in southern Europe, the Euro has been environmentalists’ most effective tool.
China produces 28% of the world’s CO2 emissions, spewing out 9.2 Billion tons which is 50% more than second placed America. This is almost four times India’s emissions level, even though they have similar sized populations. However, India is catching up, with a CO2 growth rate twice China’s.
Over the past decade, China’s increased CO2 output of 2.02 Billion tons was 60% of the global increase. Clearly, lowering CO2 won’t happen without China’s help. That will require reconciling conflicting objectives: developing countries are striving to achieve developed country living standards and longevity, which requires more energy use. Developed country advocates of reduced emissions are, in effect, seeking to slow this progress.
Thoughtful advocacy of renewables recognizes the symbiosis with natural gas in providing reliable electricity generation. The purity of thought required of renewables advocates has them rejecting even those fossil fuels that can help achieve lower overall emissions. Few would enjoy a world in which the Sierra Club had achieved all its goals.
Fossil fuels aren’t equally bad. Electricity generated by burning natural gas results in around half the CO2 output as does coal, and far less damaging particulates. Some may be surprised to learn that investing in fossil fuel infrastructure can be consistent with desiring a cleaner planet. But that’s where your blogging team sits, occupying the lonely, pragmatic middle ground and advocating natural gas as an environmental solution.
The next-generation combat unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Akinci will be one of the first projects of the joint venture created by the Ukrainian state-owned company Ukrspecexport, and the Turkish Baykar Defense company, reports the press-service of the Ukrainian national defense concern Ukroboronprom.
"The project is executed through the cooperation of the largest defense companies of Ukraine and Turkey", - said the General Director of the concern Pavlo Bukin.
According to Ukroboronprom, the next-generation combat UAV is being developed taking into account the conflicts in the 21 century. One of its main advantages, as concern specified, will be the ability to carry out high-precision strikes with ammunition that is used on conventional aircraft.
Akinci is a heavy heavy drone, equipped with two Ukrainian-made engines, which allow it to fly at an altitude of more than 12 km. The drone can carry more than a ton of payload, and its flight time could reach up to 24 hours. Also, it will receive a thermal vision system and a radar with an active large-phased array.
Earlier, Turkey announced, that the shipping of the drone will begin in 2021. It is expected that the Akinci program will work on technologies that will be used for further development of unmanned aircraft in Turkey.
On August 8, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky visited the production of Baykar unmanned aerial systems during his visit to Turkey.

Η Τουρκία πρόκειται σύντομα να γίνει η πρώτη χώρα στον κόσμο που θα χρησιμοποιήσει πλήρως αυτόνομα drones (UAV), ικανά να εντοπίζουν και να σκοτώνουν ανθρώπους χωρίς την παραμικρή ανθρώπινη παρέμβαση.
Η γειτονική χώρα άρχισε πρόσφατα την παραγωγή εξοπλισμένων drones που ελέγχονται από άνθρωπο χειριστή και, σύμφωνα με πληροφορίες, τα έχει ήδη χρησιμοποιήσει εκατοντάδες φορές στη βορειοδυτική Συρία.
Τώρα, προχωρά στο επόμενο βήμα, τη χρήση αυτόνομων drones, σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα του «New Scientist». Η τουρκική αμυντική εταιρεία STM (που ιδρύθηκε το 1991) ανακοίνωσε ότι ο στρατός τής χώρας θα αρχίσει να χρησιμοποιεί τα νέα αυτόνομα drones Kargu στις αρχές του 2020. Πρόκειται για εναέρια οχήματα βάρους επτά κιλών, με τέσσερις έλικες (quadcopters), που δρουν επίσης ως μέρος ενός ευρύτερου σμήνους, οι μονάδες του οποίου μπορούν να συνεργάζονται.
Τα Kargu διαφημίζονται από τη STM ως χρήσιμα για επιχειρήσεις αντιτρομοκρατικές και ασύμμετρου πολέμου, τόσο εναντίον στατικών όσο και κινούμενων στόχων (ανθρώπων, οχημάτων κ.ά.). Διαθέτουν ενσωματωμένες δυνατότητες επεξεργασίας εικόνων σε πραγματικό χρόνο, καθώς και αλγόριθμους βαθιάς μάθησης. Μπορούν να λειτουργήσουν τόσο τη μέρα όσο και τη νύχτα, να κάνουν πλήγματα ακριβείας, να χρησιμοποιήσουν διάφορα οπλικά συστήματα και αυτοκαταστρέφονται αν χρειαστεί.
Η τουρκική αμυντική βιομηχανία εργάζεται πυρετωδώς για την εγχώρια ανάπτυξη ολοένα πιο εξελιγμένων και φονικών drones, καθώς και πυραύλων «Κρουζ», με στόχο να μειώσει την εξάρτησή της από ξένες χώρες, σύμφωνα με δημοσίευμα του ειδησεογραφικού ιστότοπου με έδρα τις ΗΠΑ Al-Monitor, που παρακολουθεί στενά με ειδησεογραφία και αναλύσεις τις εξελίξεις στην ευρύτερη Μέση Ανατολή. Το δημοσίευμα υπογράφει ο Τούρκος πρώην στρατιωτικός Μετίν Γκουρσάν, ο οποίος μετά την παραίτησή του από τον τουρκικό στρατό, έγινε ανεξάρτητος αναλυτής για στρατιωτικά θέματα.
Σύμφωνα με το δημοσίευμα, η Τουρκία δοκίμασε προ ημερών με επιτυχία τον πρώτο της πύραυλο τύπου «Κρουζ» (SOM-B2) με εκρηκτική κεφαλή, ικανή να διαπερνά τσιμεντένια υπόγεια καταφύγια.
Παράλληλα, η τουρκική εταιρεία κατασκευής drones Baykar Makina (ανήκει στην οικογένεια του γαμπρού του Ερντογάν, του Σελτζούκ Μπαϊρακτάρ, ο οποίος είναι και επικεφαλής της εταιρείας στον τεχνολογικό τομέα) συνεργάζεται από τις αρχές Αυγούστου με την κρατική ουκρανική εταιρεία Ukrspecexport για την ανάπτυξη ενός μεγάλου τουρκικού drone, του Akinci («Επιδρομέας»), με δύο μηχανές, δυνατότητα πτήσης σε μεγάλο ύψος και για πολλή ώρα.
Η Baykar Makina έχει ήδη κατασκευάσει τα drones ΤΒ2, που χρησιμοποιεί η Τουρκία εδώ και περίπου τρία χρόνια στο εσωτερικό της, στο Ιράκ, στο Αιγαίο, στην ανατολική Μεσόγειο και τη βόρεια Συρία. Το ΤΒ2, που εξάγεται στο Κατάρ και την Ουκρανία, είναι ένα μέσου υψομέτρου και μεγάλης πτητικής ικανότητας drone, αλλά το υπό ανάπτυξη Akinci θα είναι πολύ πιο εξελιγμένο. Η ουκρανική Ukrspecexport θα παρέχει τους «τούρμπο» κινητήρες του drone.

Θα μπορεί να εφοδιαστεί με διάφορα οπλικά συστήματα, όπως καθοδηγούμενες βόμβες ακριβείας (Roketsan MAM-L), πυραύλους Cirit και ΜΑΜ-C, κυρίως όμως τον νέο πύραυλο «Κρουζ» αέρος-εδάφους Roketsan SOM-B2 με ακτίνα δράσης 250 χιλιομέτρων.
Η πρώτη δοκιμή του πυραύλου «Κρουζ» SOM-B2 ήταν επιτυχής στις 6 Σεπτεμβρίου, οπότε αναμένεται να αποτελέσει το σημαντικότερο οπλικό σύστημα του drone Akinci, το οποίο αναμένεται να αρχίσει να χρησιμοποιείται από τον τουρκικό στρατό εντός του 2021.
Η τουρκική κυβέρνηση στηρίζει την εταιρεία Baykar Makina και, παρά την οικονομική κρίση, αυτόν τον μήνα τής χορήγησε επιδότηση περίπου 120 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων, καθώς και φορολογικές απαλλαγές, προκειμένου να κατασκευάσει ένα μεγάλο εργοστάσιο κοντά στην Κωνσταντινούπολη για τη μαζική παραγωγή του drone Akinci (του πρώτου μεγάλης ακτίνας δράσης οπλισμένου drone της Τουρκίας), καθώς επίσης για να διπλασιάσει τη σημερινή παραγωγή του μικρότερου drone TB2.
Το νέο εργοστάσιο θα δημιουργήσει 1.000 νέες θέσεις εργασίας και προγραμματίζεται να παράγει μέσα στην επόμενη διετία 46 drones TB2 και 36 drones Akinci (τα 24 για τον τουρκικό στρατό, ενώ τα 13 θα εξαχθούν στην Ουκρανία), καθώς και τα αντίστοιχα συστήματα επικοινωνιών και εδάφους. Ενδιαφέρον για την αγορά του μελλοντικού Akinci έχουν εκδηλώσει το Κατάρ, το Αζερμπαϊτζάν και η Μαλαισία.
Το ερώτημα, σύμφωνα με το δημοσίευμα του Al-Monitor, είναι ποιές είναι οι στρατηγικές επιδιώξεις της Τουρκίας και πού σκοπεύει να χρησιμοποιήσει αυτά τα εξελιγμένα drones «Επιδρομείς», τα οποία θα έχουν τόσο βαρύ και ακριβείας εξοπλισμό. Η Άγκυρα θεωρεί το Akinci ως «μη επανδρωμένο μαχητικό αεροπλάνο αέρος-εδάφους» παρά ως drone. Ο συνδυασμός Akinci και πυραύλου «Κρουζ» SOM-B2 θα δώσει στην Τουρκία δυνατότητα για «χειρουργικά» πλήγματα σε απόσταση έως 600 χιλιομέτρων από το έδαφός της. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι π.χ. το Akinci μπορεί να αντικαταστήσει τα μαχητικά F-16 που σήμερα δρουν κατά των Κούρδων στο βόρειο Ιράκ και στη βόρεια Συρία.

Ten months ago we assembled a team from IBM Research in Switzerland and IBM tape developers based in Tucson, Arizona, to try to build something which has never been built before to address a risk that may not materialize for another decade or more. As you can tell, we love a good challenge.
The risk comes from quantum advantage, the point when a quantum computer can perform some particular computation significantly faster than a classical computer. The challenge we faced, develop a quantum computing safe tape drive, because at the current rate of progress in quantum computing, it is expected that data protected by the asymmetric encryption methods used today may become insecure.
Preparing Cybersecurity for a Quantum World
Quantum computing is an emerging form of computing that takes advantage of quantum mechanical phenomena to solve certain types of problem that are effectively impossible to solve on classical computers. Quantum Advantage will occur when quantum computers surpass today’s classical computers at which point they are expected to enable dramatic advances in areas such as chemistry, bioinformatics and artificial intelligence, but at the same time they will impact information security.
State of the art storage technologies, such as magnetic tape drives, use a combination of symmetric and asymmetric encryption to ensure that the data they store remains secure. However, in the future, the security of today’s asymmetric encryption techniques will very likely be broken by advances in quantum computing.
At the current rate of progress in quantum computing, it is expected that asymmetric encryption may become insecure within the next 10-30 years. While this seems rather far in the future, tape systems are often used to archive data for many years which is why it’s important to begin implementing quantum computing-safe solutions now to provide clients sufficient time to migrate to this new technology before their data becomes vulnerable.
Making Tape Quantum Computing Safe
In order to prepare for the impact that quantum computers are expected to have on data security, IBM Research has been developing cryptographic algorithms that are resistant to potential security concerns posed by quantum computers.
These algorithms are based on Lattice Cryptography, which is in turn related to a set of mathematical problems that have been studied since the 1980’s and have not succumbed to any algorithmic attacks, either classical or quantum.
In collaboration with several academic and commercial partners including: ENS Lyon, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica and Radboud University, IBM researchers have developed two quantum resistant cryptographic primitives based this work: Kyber, a secure key encapsulation mechanism and Dilithium, a secure digital signature algorithm. These two algorithms make up the “Cryptographic Suite for Algebraic Lattices” we call “CRYSTALS”.
Both of these algorithms are candidates in the second round of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Post Quantum Cryptography standardization process and will be presented today at the Second PQC Standardization Conference at the University of Santa Barbara, Aug 22-24, 2019.
The new IBM quantum computing-safe tape drive prototype is based on a state-of-the-art IBM TS1160 tape drive and uses both Kyber and Dilithium in combination with symmetric AES-256 encryption to enable the world’s first quantum computing-safe tape drive. The new algorithms are implemented as part of the tape drive’s firmware and could be provided to customers as a firmware upgrade for existing tape drives and/or included in the firmware of future generations of tape drives.
Magnetic tape has a long history of leadership in storage security and is an essential technology for protecting and preserving data. For example, IBM tape drives were the first storage technology to provide built-in encryption starting with the TS1120 Enterprise Tape Drive.
In addition, tape provides an additional layer of security via an airgap between the data stored on a cartridge and the outside world, i.e. data stored on a cartridge cannot be read or modified unless it is mounted in a tape drive. The security and reliability provided by tape systems combined with their low total cost of ownership have resulted in tape becoming the technology of choice for archiving data in the cloud as well as in commercial and scientific data centers
With the development of quantum computing-safe tape encryption technology, IBM Tape continues the legacy of tape leadership in security and encryption and reaffirms its long term commitment to this critical part of modern storage infrastructure.

The tech giant has vowed to go carbon neutral by 2040, beating the Paris Agreement by 10 years. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has encouraged other companies to follow suit. The move comes a day ahead of global climate protests.
Online retail giant Amazon on Thursday pledged to go completely carbon neutral by 2040. To this end, Amazon announced plans to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian, a start-up in which it has also invested.
Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos — the richest man in modern history — encouraged other firms to follow suit and help meet the carbon neutrality goals of the Paris climate accord 10 years early. The US announced in 2017 that it would withdraw from the historic agreement, but many states and entitities have vowed to follow the commitments.
Amazon delivers 10 billion items a year and has a massive carbon footprint.
"We want to use our scope and our scale to lead the way," Bezos told a news conference in Washington, announcing its "Climate Pledge."
